Women's Football has been present on the Rock for over 26 years.
Due to an increase in participation levels and interest in playing football amongst women in Gibraltar, a 7 aside league and the Juan Chipol Cup - Futsal Tournament was created followed shortly after by an 11 aside league.
Consequently, Women's Football was restructured and a 9 aside league was introduced and the Rock Cup Tournament created. The 9 aside league has since grown from strength to strength with more and more clubs showing interest.
Since entering the UEFA family, Women's Football in Gibraltar has been able to attract further enthusiasm from both young girls and women alike. This increase in participation is not only visible amongst female players within the game but also with regular newly qualified female referees, officials and coaches.
Grassroots Football and Football For All began to form a big part of the Gibraltar FA's Women's Development Programme. With this ethos in mind, the "Girls Football Development Programme" was initiated. Members of the Women's Football Department visited various schools in Gibraltar, offering help, advice and equipment where possible and the "Fun Friday's" was launched. This programme specifically targeted girls aged 5 to 12 and has proven to be very popular. Due to its success, the Women's Football Department are now looking to inroduce other similar programmes in order to bridge the gap between these young girls currently participating in grassroots football and the Women's League.
